Serving the Region

A History of Tradition

For 130 years, Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital has delivered high-quality health care to patients in the twin tiers region of New York and Pennsylvania. Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital was established in 1885 to meet the health care needs of those working in the Sayre, Pa railroad yard. Academics are a distinguishing characteristic at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital, dating back to 1901 when the School of Nursing was founded. The Donald Guthrie Research Foundation started in 1942 and with funds from the Emily Guthrie Estate the Guthrie Research Institute was formed in 1980. Guthrie's commitment to learning and education includes the Internal Medicine Residency program in 1958, General Surgery Residency program in 1959, and the Family Practice Residency program in 1993. Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital is now a 267-bed tertiary care teaching hospital serving the southern tier of New York and the northern tier of Pennsylvania.

Guthrie is a not-for-profit health care organization that includes primary care and specialty physicians, community hospitals, home care, a tertiary trauma center, and a research institute, as well an education center with a residency programs in family medicine, internal medicine, general surgery, emergency medicine and pharmacy and fellowship programs in cardiovascular disease, gastroenterology and pulmonary disease and critical care medicine. Guthrie Medical Group is a multi-specialty group practice of more than 300 physicians and 190 advanced practice providers. With its headquarters in a large medical office complex in Sayre, Pa., the regional office network encompasses subspecialty and primary sites in 21 communities throughout Pennsylvania and New York.

The hospitals of Guthrie include Robert Packer Hospital, Corning Hospital, Troy Community Hospital, Cortland Medical Center and Robert Packer Hospital, Towanda Campus. Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital is a 267-bed tertiary care teaching hospital that serves the region as a Level I Regional Trauma Center, located in Sayre, Pa., also home to Guthrie Air, a regional aeromedical helicopter program. Robert Packer Hospital is nationally renowned for its cardiac surgery program, is home to a state-of-the-art cancer center and other advanced care services. Guthrie Corning Hospital is a full-service community hospital, providing care for those living in Steuben and Chemung Counties, N.Y. Guthrie Troy Community Hospital, a Critical Access Hospital, offers a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services including diagnostic testing and rehabilitation as well as medical and surgical care in Troy, Pa. and opened the doors of a new facility in 2013.
