Guthrie Lourdes Hospital - Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
HBOT is a painless treatment, during which you relax in a pressurized chamber that delivers 100% oxygen to your body. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy:
-
Promotes wound healing from the inside out
-
Reduces pain
-
Improves circulation
-
Fights infection
What conditions are treated with HBOT?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can treat a variety of conditions, including:
-
Diabetic foot ulcers (Wagner grade III or greater)
-
Radiation cystitis
-
Soft tissue radionecrosis
-
Osteoradionecrosis of the mandible
-
Failed skin grafts
-
Chronic refractory osteomyelitis
-
Carbon monoxide poisoning
-
Crush injuries
-
Decompression sickness
-
Gas gangrene
-
Necrotizing fasciitis
What to expect during an HBOT session?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy sessions typically last approximately two hours. You will lie or sit comfortably inside the chamber, where you can read a book, watch a movie or even take a nap. Our specially trained caregivers will be with you the entire time to ensure your comfort and safety.
What makes a multiplace chamber different?
The hyperbaric oxygen chamber at Guthrie Lourdes Hospital is unique in that it is a multiplace chamber, which means it can treat multiple patients at the same time. This is different from monoplace chambers, which can only treat one patient at a time. In the multiplace chamber, patients receive oxygen through comfortable hoods, custom-fitted to each patient. Although a monoplace chamber has its own unique benefits, a multiplace chamber can be favorable for those who tend to feel claustrophobic.
