What You Can Expect
Throughout the program you will participate in a variety of learning experiences that will include:
- A comprehensive General Nursing Orientation to Guthrie in the classroom/skills lab, followed by a unit orientation
- Preceptor and unit-based educator guided hands-on experiences through your choice of either:
- Direct hire positions on available units
- Decisions to hire nurse residents direct are at the discretion of the unit manager
- Unit orientation will begin immediately following general orientation (see below)
- Rotation option
- Clinical rotations on various patient care units
- Opportunities available for up to three clinical rotations (depending on Guthrie entity)
- Meet with a Nurse Educator Advisor prior to your start date to review the hiring units for your track
- Rank available units in order of interest
- Rotations will begin after completion of General Nursing Orientation
- Near the end of your third rotation, you will meet with your Nurse Educator Advisor again to discuss your experiences on your rotations and rank the units you worked on in your order of preference for hire
- After matching, you will begin working on the unit you were matched to and complete a unit-specific orientation
- Length of orientation varies by specialty and individual progress
- Clinical rotations on various patient care units
- Direct hire positions on available units
- Continuing Orientation in Nursing (COIN) Monthly Training Sessions during the program are held at the Sayre and Binghamton campuses for all NLRNs. Guthrie participates in the Vizient/AACN™, the which is a national program of more than 600 hospitals and more than 240,000 participants. This program's curriculum contains:
- Interactive learning in the lab
- Simulation learning/training
- Case studies
- Evidence-based practices
- Expert guest presenters
- Debriefing and mentoring discussions
- Participate in Linking Evidence and Practice (LEAP)
- Evidence-based Practice group project
- COIN graduation occurs at the end of your first year, where you are joined by the nursing leadership team to celebrate your first year in nursing practice.
- COIN Graduates are promoted to RN2 on Guthrie's Clinical Ladder at the time of graduation
