What Leads to a Bone Fracture?
Bone fractures are caused by many things such as sports injuries, motor vehicle accidents, or a fall. Osteoporosis, which is a condition where your bones weaken as you age, can also make it easier for your bones to break. If you think that you have a fracture, seek medical attention immediately. Our orthopedic trauma specialists will be able to treat you quickly and relieve any pain associated with your fracture.
Symptoms you may experience when breaking a bone include:
- Pain
- Tenderness
- Swelling
- Numbness
- Tingling
- Trouble moving your limb
- A limb that looks bent or out of place
In an emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.
For non-emergencies, call 866-GUTHRIE (866-488-4743) to make an appointment.
Diagnosing and Treating Fractures
Some fractures are diagnosed immediately if the bone pierces skin. However, some broken bones are not so obvious. We’ll go over your medical history and take an X-ray of the area suspected of having a bone fracture. Depending on your diagnosis, you will also need lab tests and a Bone Density Scan.
We treat fractures based on the severity of your case. Some examples of how we secure your bone for the best healing possible include:
- Splints
- Braces
- Plaster casts
- Aircast boot
- Surgically inserted metal rods or plates to hold the bone together
You can also expect medications to be prescribed to you and follow-up appointments with your doctor to monitor your progress.
