Welcome from the Program Director

Zia H. Shah, MD

Welcome to the Guthrie Lourdes Internal Medicine residency program. As the Program Director, I'm pleased that you're considering our program for your residency training. Although our Internal Medicine Residency Program began recently in 2023, The Guthrie Clinic has prioritized educating future physicians for over a century and we continue to broaden our program offerings.

I hold board certifications from ABIM in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary, and Sleep Disorders. As an alumnus of King Edward Medical University, Pakistan, my training and practice extend across three continents, including the U.K. and the U.S. My Internal Medicine training took place at United Health Services, Binghamton, N.Y., from 1989-1992, and I completed my Pulmonary and Critical Care fellowship at Buffalo University from 1992-1995.

My career vision has always been to merge patient care with medical education. I am deeply committed to training physicians and specialists in the Southern Tier. Having previously contributed to other teaching programs at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, I am now eager to lead the Internal Medicine residency program, which welcomed its inaugural batch of six residents in July 2023.

We invite applicants who have both the talent and drive to excel. Our focus is on promoting diversity and providing an educational atmosphere that extends beyond traditional medical practice. We emphasize patient experience, quality improvement, community service, research, education, and leadership.
